Not Another Vet Nurse (NAVN) seeks to bring awareness, change, and possibly end the stigma of mental health and suicide within veterinary medicine. Not only is the veterinary profession among the top for suicide concerns but the statistics regarding mental health are just as alarming. 1 in 10 Veterinarians has suffered severe psychological distress. 1 in 6 have considered suicide. 1 in 5 have been a victim or knows someone who has been a victim of cyber bullying.
A good amount of people joining the veterinary field already suffer from a mental health condition. We are then faced with a number of psychologically stressful, even traumatic events (animal neglect, animal abuse, trauma, euthanasia, etc.) on a daily basis. In a recent AVMA study 67% of veterinary professionals have experienced depression, 60% of veterinary professionals had a family history of depression, anxiety or substance abuse, and 25% of veterinary professionals were already taking medication for diagnosed depression or anxiety.
Unfortunately, not all veterinary professionals have access to proper mental health care. Not all veterinary hospitals offer benefits and if they do it’s no guarantee that behavioral health will be covered. NAVN found out countries with free healthcare do not have immediate access to mental health care. They have to wait and if they can’t they are forced to pay out of pocket if they go outside of their healthcare.
The cost of mental health care worldwide is increasingly expensive. Contrary to popular belief, veterinary professionals do not get paid enough to match our workload. This means affording mental health care can be challenging.
NAVN strives to provide veterinary professionals with the mental health care funds they so desperately need and deserve. May is National Mental Health Awareness Month. This is our first fundraiser to raise funds to help veterinary professionals have access to mental health care.
Our 2022 goal is to walk, run, bike, bike, wheelchair 12,000 miles and make $1,000 towards our mission of helping veterinary professionals with mental health care. You can sign up as an individual or a team (even a clinic!) to fundraise. Exercise is one of the ways we can help combat some of the side effects of mental illness, and is a great way to promote self care.
We look forward to making this an annual event to help spread awareness while coming together to support veterinary professionals mental health.
Track workouts anywhere & anytime and complete goal.

I am an international donor (non-US), what are my donation charges and tax-deductibility?
All donations are made in US dollars, so the donations may be levied an exchange rate fee via your bank. Donors will want to connect with their bank to determine exactly what that fee may be. Additionally, international donors will need to reach out to a tax professional to discuss if and how tax deductibility will apply to their donation.
Who can sponsor my fundraising efforts?
The short answer is - everyone. The fundraising research shows that the number one reason for people not donating is that they weren't asked to.
That said, there are things you can do to attract people to sponsor you. Adding a picture to your fundraising page, telling potential donors why this cause is so personal to you, sharing your fundraising page on social media, email, and chat groups.
Last, if your employer has a gift matching program, check with the human resources department to support your favorite cause as well.
