ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
Saving Lives, One Child at a Time
Nurturing Nations was founded on the belief that even in a world often overshadowed by war, poverty, and injustice, the power of compassion can create profound change. The simple act of reaching out to help others can illuminate lives and inspire hope. Nurturing Nations seeks to harness this spirit of kindness, spreading it across distances—whether they be miles, mountains, or oceans to alleviate the burdens faced by our fellow human beings. Our mission is to empower children through education, dispel prejudices against people with disabilities, and protect and provide for those in need.
The roots of Nurturing Nations lie in a deeply personal journey. In 2010, Laura and Mark Belk traveled to Ghana to adopt their youngest daughter, who was the first child with Down Syndrome to be adopted from the country. Witnessing the persecution their daughter faced due to her disability, alongside the severe poverty surrounding other children, ignited a passion within them to effect change. Their experiences with their son, also born with Down Syndrome, reinforced their conviction that every person’s life is of equal value. They recognized that education could be the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and dispelling the prejudices surrounding children with disabilities, prompting them to take action.
From its inception, Nurturing Nations has proven that a small charity can have significant impact. Operated by volunteers, every donation received goes directly to those in need, ensuring that resources are maximized without administrative overhead. Our 501(c)(3) status, attained in 2014, allows for tax-deductible contributions in the United States, while our accreditation as an approved N.G.O. by the Department of Social Welfare in Ghana reinforces our commitment to transparency and accountability. With your support, we can continue to make a difference, transforming lives and communities one child at a time.
